I'm a bit late in reporting on this year's Matinicus Island Christmas Bird Count since we flew out and did the count on January 6th but above and below are some photos provided by Kirk Rogers who did the count with me again this year (see last year's blog entry for more on Kirk's exploits). We were joined this year by Travis Barrett, the outdoor writer for the local newspaper, the Kennebec Journal, who wrote a fun piece about the whole thing which you can read here.

A couple pictures of the group - more trip pictures below...

And here's a Matinicus islander's slightly annoyed take on it.

I did a short article on the experience of doing the Matinicus CBC from my perspective for Audubon's Christmas Bird Count summary magazine, American Birds, last year which you can see here (PDF).

We ended up finding 38 species including some birds that were new for us for the count: Carolina Wren, White-crowned Sparrow, as well as Pine Grosbeaks, American Robins, Northern Flicker, Swamp Sparrow, Pine Siskins, White-winged Crossbills and lots of Long-tailed Ducks and Common Eiders.
