Dear {FIRST_NAME|Reader},
We've got great news this month! More Boreal Forest protection is promised in Quebec, top international scientists take up the Boreal cause, and we share lots of ways you can help Boreal birds.
Top Scientists Rally Behind Boreal Forest
Fourteen of the world's leading ecologists, biologists, global warming experts and conservation scientists have joined forces to form the International Boreal Conservation Science Panel. They urge Canada to consider a contemporary approach to conservation – one that focuses on protecting large, intact ecosystems like the Boreal Forest – because previous mandates to protect small, disconnected areas have not proved capable of meeting global conservation goals. We're excited to follow this panel of experts as they put science to work for the Boreal Forest and our birds.

Quebec PM Promises 50% Boreal Protection
On November 15, Premier of Quebec Jean Charest announced that after the December 8 election (which he is expected to win), the Quebec government will protect at least 50 percent of the Boreal Forest from mining, logging, and energy development. Within these protected lands – an area of over 200,000 square miles (roughly the size of France) – Charest promises to create five new provincial parks. We salute Charest for matching Premier Dalton McGuinty's July commitment of 50% protection in Ontario's Boreal. Read the whole story >
Top Ten Ways You Can Help Migrating Birds
Did you know that 75% of North American birds migrate? Some of our favorite long-distance migrants start their journeys in Canada's Boreal Forest and fly all the way to South America: Bay-breasted Warbler, Swainson's Hawk, Blackpoll Warbler and Hudsonian Godwit. Our friends at Nature Canada explain how to help these travelers by making your home, your yard, and even your daily commute bird-friendly. Find out what you can do >
Tell U.S. Congress to Expand Bird Protection
It's a great week in Canada for birds; let's make sure the U.S. keeps up! The Neotropical Migratory Bird Conservation Act (NMBCA) is due for reauthorization in Congress, with a proposal to increase funding from $6 million to $20 million per year by 2015. Let your senators and representatives know that you support the NMBCA. Write an email through the Act for Songbirds campaign, created by our friends at the American Bird Conservancy. David Suzuki Says: Give Birds a Helping Hand
November's Nature Challenge from our friends at the David Suzuki Foundation is to help birds – especially Boreal birds – and DSF is chock full of terrific ideas! Learn to identify bird-friendly coffee, chocolate, and paper products; teach kids about birds with crafty projects; get a list of favorite bird books; watch a video about making a bird feeder; enjoy a sneak peak at David Suzuki's Green Guide; and best of all, exchange ideas with fellow bird enthusiasts in the DSF Green Room!
