Birds Need Half Buzz

March 16, 2015 | Jeff Wells

Today, BSI has teamed up with Ducks Unlimited to launch a new campaign called Boreal Birds Need Half. As the title indicates, the campaign calls for the protection of at least half of North America's boreal forest to preserve the billions of migratory birds that breed there each summer. It also calls for any development in remaining areas to be done in a socially and sustainably responsible manner.

You can check out the new campaign website and add your name as a citizen endorser here:
http://www.borealbirdsneedhalf.org/

The campaign is based on the recommendations of modern conservation science and has already been endorsed by major bird and nature groups in the U.S. and Canada, including the National Audubon Society, Bird Studies Canada, Cornell Lab of Ornithology, Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society, and others. Now we're asking individuals to add their name as well.

Check out this great video the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service created about the boreal forest and birds:

The launch has also generated some nice 'boreal buzz' in the media:

CBC News:
'Bird nursery' at risk unless half of Canada's boreal forest preserved »

Vancouver Sun:
Conservation groups seek to protect North American boreal forests »

Edmonton Journal:
Birders, nature groups call for better boreal forest protection »

Let's hope this great momentum continues!
